All of us enjoy piping hot momos from any Nepali Uncle on the streets. But, do you know the journey of momos?
From Nepal to Darjeeling, Dharamshala, Manali, Delhi and now, to Mumbai, momos are still travelling all over India and is considered as one of the most popular street food of all time. Come to think of it, the momo has probably travelled the farthest of all foods.
For those who are living under a rock, momos are also called as dumplings or dim sums in some areas, which are usually soft dough balls with a filling of vegetable inside it and it is served with a spicy chutney. It is a traditional delicacy in Nepal and Tibet.
When Tibetan refugees came to India in the 1960s, they settled in various areas in northern India and brought their culture with them.
What makes momos taste so good?
The taste of momos entirely depends on the method of your preparation. The dough in which the filling is stuffed should be fresh and of fine quality. One of the main quality of a good momo is the dough, if it is not soft, you will not like your dumpling. Some people even use hot water to knead the dough so that it becomes soft after steaming it. The stuffing should be minced well and flavoured with lots of ginger and garlic to make delicious momos.
They are prepared in different shapes and patterns. Their stuffing varies from vegetable stuffing to chicken and mushrooms.
They are also available in many variants like traditional steamed momos, fried and tandoori momos.
Momos are traditionally served in a bamboo basket with a spicy red chutney.
In Mumbai, momos are sold in a small stall where it is pre-prepared and steamed in front of the customer and served hot.
