SUPERFOODS??

Nutritionally speaking, there is no such thing as superfood. The term was coined for marketing purposes to influence food trends and sell products. These “superfoods” offer some very important nutrients that can power-pack your meals and snacks, and further enhance a healthy eating pattern.


Superfoods are foods that have a very high nutritional density. This means that they provide a substantial amount of nutrients and very few calories.


Though many foods could be described as super, it’s important to understand that there is no single food that holds the key to good health or disease prevention.


Here is a list of some superfoods-


1. BERRIES Berries are a nutritional powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and anti-oxidants. The strong antioxidant capacity of berries is associated with a reduced risk of heart diseases, cancer, and other inflammatory conditions. Read more about berries here!


2. DARK LEAFY GREENS The dark leafy vegetable is a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Calcium. Part of what makes dark leafy greens so super is their potential to reduce your risk of chronic illnesses including heart diseases and type 2 diabetes.


3. OLIVE OIL

It is a natural oil extracted from the fruit of olive trees. It is an amazing source of Vitamin E, polyphenols, and some fatty acids which help to reduce the risk of heart disease.


4. NUTS AND SEEDS Nuts and seeds are rich in fiber and heart-healthy fats. They are an amazing source of plant protein. They contain compounds that reduce the risk of heart diseases.



5. GREEN TEA

Green Tea is a caffeinated beverage that is rich in anti-oxidants. A compound in green tea, EGCG gives green tea its apparent ability to protect against chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.


6. YOGURT Yogurt is an amazing source of calcium and protein. It contains probiotics, also called "good bacteria" which can protect the body from other harmful bacteria. Fermented foods have several health benefits including reduced cholesterol, lowered blood pressure, improved digestion, and anti-inflammatory effects.



7. SALMON

Salmon is a favorite choice because it contains significant amounts of essential omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and eye health. This heart-healthy fish boasts a boatload of other nutrients, as well.


8. AVOCADOS

Avocados are highly nutritious. It is very rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. Eating avocados may reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and certain types of cancer.
